Many enthusiasts of Gilels and of Beethoven know that Gilels died tragically and unexpectedly in October of 1985, shortly after he had moved even closer to completing his DG cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas. The missing sonatas are the op. 2/1, the op. 14/1, the op. 54, the op. 78 and the op.

Welcome to the 104th work in the Slipped Disc/Idagio Beethoven Edition Sonata for Piano No. 32 in C minor op. 111 (1821-22) Beethoven wrote the last of his sonatas in just two movements, breaking Lortie's Op. 110 and 111 however, are on a Fazioli piano, about both of which pianos are detailed and attentive notes parallel to the better consistency in recording and differences that are not jarring and are, on the contrary, quite interesting to anyone who follows the tones of different pianos. Op.111 is my favorite Beethoven sonata too, and my favorite interpretation of it is by Dame Myra Hess. My next favorite sonata is Op. 101 as interpreted by Claudio Arrau.
